Starting a Guys Movie Night

I have a group of guys I get together with every so often to go to the theater and watch movies that our wives could care less about. It’s a great excuse to get together with just the guys once in a while and our wives are happy because they don’t have to sit through some testosterone filled movie.

Getting it started. The main task for getting your group together is communication. There are a few options that work well, and the idea is to allow anyone to be able to email the entire group.

Facebook.  Create a private Facebook page for your group. This would depend on everyone being members of Facebook.

CoolList.com: An even easier, and perhaps better way to announce upcoming Guys Movie Night events is to use the free website service coollist.com. You can setup a free group, for example, machomovienight@coollist.com and your friends can subscribe to it. Then anyone in the group can email machomovienight@coollist.com and everyone will get the email. If someone gets a new email account, they can go in and update their info in the list.

Notifying the Guys: Send out an email about one month before the movie comes out so the guys know to wait and watch this one with the group. Then about a week before, and then again a day or two before, send out details of which theater, movie, time, etc. of the action-packed movie you’ll be watching. If possible throw an image of the movie and a link to the trailer in the email to get everyone pumped up to see it.

Plan the after party. It’s always fun to go out for wings and drinks after the movie and talk about all the cool scenes with the guys. Get it out of the system with someone who actually wants to hear about how cool it was to see someone’s arm broken with a protruding bone, before you get home to your wife. Although I must say, I have one awesome wife who actually prefers action-packed movies over chick-flicks.

Get Started. A great movie to start with would be G.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra. It comes out August 7th, 2009.
