Review: DVDFab Platinum

DVDFab Platinum is the most powerful and flexible DVD copying/burning software. With 8 copy modes, you can back up any DVD to DVDR in just a few clicks.

Platform: Windows

What would I use DVDFab for? DVDFab is a great software program that allows you to copy any DVD movie. I copy the majority of movies that I own for my media center and I have yet to come across one that DVDFab has trouble copying due to the copyright protection.

Easy to use: DVDFab Platinum makes it very easy to copy or rip a dvd to your hard drive (among other features like splitting and merging). You simply put in the DVD and launch DVDFab Platinum. Once DVDFab Platinum recognizes the DVD you can choose what you want to do with the DVD. All of the movies I rip to my media server I do so by selecting “Main Movie” so that I don’t see any of the dvd menu or copyright protection, etc. That way when I start the movie in Front Row the movie starts right at the beginning. Great feature. You can also choose any of the audio tracks or subtitles that you want to copy as well. And what’s great, is that DVDFab Platinum does not convert or compress your DVD at all. It simply copies the chapters that you choose and removes the copy protection so you have absolutely no loss of quality. Front Row treats the ripped movie exactly as if I had the original dvd in. I can still skip chapters and go through the menu options (if I choose to Full Disc instead of Main Movie) as if the dvd were in my Mac. On average, movies take me about 30 minutes to rip.

Mobile Options:

With the Mobile Option, you can create a video file that will play on just about any kind of device you would want to: iPod, PSP, Zune, PS3, Xxox 360, Cell Phone, PDA. I’ve only used the iPod feature, but it worked perfectly. It seems to take a little bit longer to convert the video for your device, but all of the options have the defaults already setup for what you need, but still allow you to do any advanced tweaking you may want. Once I rip a movie for iPod, I simply import it into my iTunes library and then copy it to my iPod as if I would any iTunes movie.

Pricing: The price for DVDFab platinum is $49.99 and Mobile Options is $19.99. The website frequently has a 20% off discount coupon you can which helps a little. The price is a little high compared to other software programs, but the ease of use, and ability to copy any DVD you throw at it makes this an easy choice. Be sure to download the 30 day trial to see what you think first.

My Ranking: DVDFab Platinum with the Mobile Option is one of the few reasons I still have a copy of Windows on my iMac. I’ve done countless hours of research trying to find a Mac software program that works as well as DVDFab Platinum and I’ve yet to find it. DVDFab Platinum is perfect for anyone who has a lot of movies that they want to rip to a media server or portable media player. I love the “Main Movie” feature and the ability to rip it and not lose any picture quality at all. The fact that I have not yet come across any DVD this program can’t copy is a huge plus. I would give it an 8 out of 10. I’m deducting one point for the slightly high price and another point because they don’t have it for Mac. So really, it deserves a 9 out of 10.

I would be remiss if I didn’t include the disclaimer for this software:
